I don't know what's going on with my Macbook, but it really freaked me out two days ago when it started. Yesterday, I was really sick, so wasn't on any computers. anyway, I was writing something in Text Edit and it started making the sound that it normally makes when I reach the end of a document. I also couldn't read what I was writing with the down arrow. Only the up arrow would work. So I tried writing in IJournal (a LiveJournal client) and the same thing happened with the arrow keys. I also can't access the menus properly. for instance, to get into the apple menu, I have to hit enter on it and then again, I can only use the up arrow. I can't use the links list function (I forget it's actual name) in Safari either. Oddly enough, I can read documents word by word or have VoiceOver read all. Also, when this first happened, Adium disappeared, but it came back when I restarted. While in Adium, I discovered that I can't interact with text. I went to software update, thinking this would solve the problem but it didn't. I even tried hitting vo keys along with p and r but that didn't work. A friend told me I'd hear the start-up tone five times, but it just turned on as usual. Can anyone please help me? Is this something easy to fix or will I have to reformat the whole machine? Thanks.
Aah, I've been waiting to say this, fix is simple, switch to Windows!!!!!
In more seriousness, I had to post this since I've seen the "switch to Mac" so many times.
Best of luck and hopefully someone will have a more useful advice.
cheers

I gotta agree with B on this one, LOL. when people have problems with windows, they say switch to mack. and when the mack shits the bed, they say switch to windows! It probably has something to do with your display settings, or possibly a software update changed the way that Leopard behaves and it's messing up Vo for some reason, I did hear that a huge software update was available and that may have something to do with it.
Thing is, it started out of nowhere and before I did the upgrade. I just really wish I could fix this, whatever it is. I'm not good enough at using the Mac yet to be able to try and diagnose this let alone to fix it.
It's gotta be a hardware problem involving your down arrow. Sorry, Windows guys, if it's hardware, our computers are all made by the same Chinese in the same factory, so switching wouldn't help. Lol! Smile!
Well, I know I didn't spill anything in it or drop it. It just started out of nowhere. However, I did set up Mac Mail. Maybe, that has something to do with it, though it took at least a day for it to start doing that and it started all of a sudden.
Apple mail wouldn't have anything to do with it. There's a keyboard update available. Launch Software Update, grab it, and see if it fixes anything. If not, my suggestion on LJ stands. Take it to an Apple genius.
Thanks for all your help. Your comments on lj really reassured me. I actually did call Apple and we've got an appointment scheduled for tomorrow ad 6 P.M. When I spoke with tech support (which was wonderful btw) they told me that it sounds like a hardware problem. I just hope everything can be fixed in store so I can get my Mac back asap. I love that machine!
They'll have it fixed probably while you wait. Don't worry your lil self over it. You're in good hands. Let me know how it goes.
Oh Brew you wicked feller you! did I really hear you say, um, well, anyway, I think jesse's got the right idea. Besides, well, um, ya know it's like this: the Mac just works.
Well, they said it was definitely a hardwear problem and they gave me a brand new machine. I have all of my important stuff saved to divshare.com, so I'm not too worried. All's well that ends well. *smile* Mom also said the people there were wonderful and worked very quickly to determine the problem. There was even someone there who might know if the Mac will work with ESpeak, but that department was out for the week. Oh, and she got me external speakers like I asked, so now I can listen to music properly and hear VoiceOver even in noisy situations.
There ya go! I knew they'd be good to you! Try that with Dell, HP, or Toshiba, my PC-loving friends!
Of course with PCs you can buy a back up pc along with your laptop and still pay less than for the Mac *grin*.
Well, good that you got this fixed *grin* I remain stonchly anti Mac of course, mr Woof wouldnever forgive me otherwise.
Haha! We see that. We'll try not to hold it against you.
well cool that they fixed it hope you have fun with it.
Woof, woof woof! "extends a paw to brew... ONe day you'll see the light and I'll be there to congratulate you.
Surely you mean I'll hear the light (or is it hear the noise/vice)?
If I do you shall be the first to know *grin*.
